Penile cancer is an uncommon type of cancer that generally affects the skin of the penis, most frequently seen in men over the age of 50. The type of penile cancer varies based on the cells from which it originates.

Symptoms of Penile Cancer
It is important to be aware of any abnormalities or signs of penile cancer, which may include:

  • A growth or sore on the penis that does not heal within four weeks
  • Persistent bleeding from the penis or beneath the foreskin
  • Foul-smelling discharge
  • Thickening of the skin on the penis or foreskin, causing difficulty in retracting the foreskin (phimosis)
  • Changes in the skin colour of the penis or foreskin
  • A rash on the penis that does not resolve

If you observe any of these symptoms or have concerns, it is essential to consult your doctor promptly. While these symptoms are unlikely to be caused by penile cancer, they require medical evaluation.

Preventing Penile Cancer
Although it is not always possible to completely prevent penile cancer, you can take steps to reduce your risk:

  • Quit smoking, as it increases the risk of penile cancer.
  • Maintain good penile hygiene to prevent bacterial and viral infections that can increase risk, especially if you are uncircumcised.

Simple hygiene practices include:

  • Using condoms to lower the risk of contracting human papillomavirus (HPV).
  • Regularly washing the penis with warm water, ensuring to clean under the foreskin.

There is limited evidence to suggest that adult circumcision reduces the likelihood of developing penile cancer. Therefore, focus on preventive measures such as proper hygiene and avoiding risk factors like smoking for optimal penile health.
